The goal of Therapeutic Reflexology is to trigger the return of balance in the body. The most important step towards achieving this is to reduce tension and induce relaxation. Relaxation is the first step to normalization and when the body is relaxed, healing is possible. Blood vessels are not constricted, circulation is greatly improved and every cell in the body can be more effectively supplied with nutrients and oxygen.
The Reflexologist stimulates all the reflexes in a treatment specific sequence. If a particular area or reflex on the foot feels tender when pressed, this may indicate stress or weakness in the corresponding organ or body part. It may also indicate an excess of acidity in the bloodstream, causing a build up of grainy calcium deposits which develop into acidic crystals settling beneath the skin’s surface at the nerve endings (72,000 in each foot).
The treatment will assist in breaking down these stagnant toxins and congested crystal molecules by eliminating and releasing them into the blood stream. This eases pain and swelling in the feet and legs and encourages all body systems to perform efficiently by improving blood circulation, balancing hormones, recharging immunity resulting in the enhancement and quality of life.
It is important to note that Reflexologists do not claim to heal the body or cure disease – we can only remind the body of its own healing potential.
What to expect During a Reflexology Treatment
A reflexology treatment is an hour session. The first appointment is an hour and a half, which includes half an hour consultation. It is important for the therapist to gather personal information and a comprehensive overview of the lifestyle, general health and well-being of the patient eg medical complaints, past symptoms and illnesses, previous operations, allergies and intolerances, family history, current and previous medication, dietary habits, sleeping patterns and stress management. This information will ascertain a complete picture of the patient’s health on the day to be recorded and used for reference during further treatments in order to gauge progress.
It’s important to note that the patient will also play an active role in the treatment program by taking responsibility and having a genuine desire to be healthy, in some cases, considering lifestyle changes so as to elevate the healing process. Most imbalances and ‘dis-eases’ have taken time to manifest and will therefore take time to eradicate.
Once the feet have been cleaned with a mild disinfectant and a visual assessment has been made, the treatment begins. The reflexologist uses various stretching and relaxation techniques to release and soften tension from the feet.
First the toes and then the feet reflexes are stimulated. The pressure of the treatment will be determined by the individual’s level of comfort. The treatment is mostly calming and is brought to a close with a relaxing foot massage.
Herbal cream or oil is applied to stimulate circulation and relax the patient at the end of the treatment.
